Irrigation Case History: MFE Slipline of Water Supply

Hobas Pipe Facilitates Successful Rehabilitation of Water Supply Under Live Runway

At McAllen-Miller International Airport in Texas, Hobas Pipe played a pivotal role in rehabilitating a deteriorated 72-inch diameter water supply pipeline located beneath an active runway.

The project, critical to the city’s reservoir and future airport growth, required precise engineering and collaboration. Hobas partnered with the airport and HNTB Corporation to design a custom solution using fiberglass reinforced polymer mortar (FRPM) pipes.

Summit Contracting, despite being new to pipeline rehabilitation, executed the challenging sliplining process efficiently, ensuring minimal disruption to air traffic. Innovative techniques, including custom fittings and nighttime grouting, allowed the team to complete the project ahead of schedule. The new leak-free pipeline has improved operational efficiency and eliminated marsh-like conditions caused by previous leaks.

East Columbia Basin Irrigation District

The East Columbia Basin Irrigation District project is a large-scale initiative aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the region’s irrigation system. Managed by the East Columbia Basin Irrigation District, the project involves the installation of an impressive 25,000 linear feet of pipe, ranging from 42 to 28 inches in diameter. The project scope reflects a commitment to providing the infrastructure necessary to support the district’s agricultural community and ensure the sustainable distribution of water resources across the area.

This design-build project, executed with a direct bury installation method, eliminates the need for a traditional engineering firm, streamlining the process to focus on efficient implementation. By leveraging high-quality materials and modern installation techniques, the project promises to deliver a robust pipeline system capable of withstanding the demands of long-term use. The East Columbia Basin Irrigation District’s dedication to this extensive upgrade underscores its mission to support the irrigation needs of local farmers while prioritizing operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.
